這對父子是長跑健將.在過去二十五年間
他們一共跑了 3770 mile
其中包括 78 次半馬拉松賽，64 次的馬拉松賽，

24 次著名的波士頓馬拉松賽，20 次 Duathlons 賽，

7 次 18.6 Milers 賽，34 次 10 Milers 賽 ，

143 次 5 Milers 賽，6 次 20 Milers 賽，

27 次 Falmouth 7.1 milers 賽，15 次 4 Milers 賽，

2 次 11 公里賽，8 次 15 公里賽，204 次 10 公里賽，

4 次 8 公里賽，92 次 5 公里賽，

206 次奧運標準的三項鐵人賽，

6 次被公認不是平常人可以承受的 Ironman distances 的終極三項鐵人賽…

跑步時 Dick 就推著 Rick 跑

但是你知道嗎？
兒子 Rick 是不能說話也不能走路的！

Rick 在出生時因臍帶繞頸導致腦部缺氧受損，

醫生告訴 Dick，孩子是植物人，沒有任何希望了，

因此他只能在輪椅上渡過他的一生。
Dick 引述在 Rick 九個月大時，

醫生對他和他妻子茱蒂（Judy）說︰

「他從此會像植物人一樣，還是把他送到療養院吧。」

Dick 反駁說︰「跟他說個笑話吧。」他們便說了個笑話，Rick 果然笑了，

證明了他的腦內確有不少活動。

結果，他們為 Rick 加裝了一部能用頭的側面控制滑鼠的電腦，

Rick 終於能和外界溝通了！

在 Rick 十五歲時，Rick 的一位中學的同學因意外而癱瘓了，

學校為那位學生舉行跑步籌款，Rick 便透過電腦打出︰

「爸，我也想參加。」

Dick 之前並非跑步運動員，也沒有跑過馬拉松賽
但因著兒子的要求就參加了
於是他就推著 Rick 跑完了 5 miles 的全程

在結束之後
Rick 對父親說：「我今生第一次不覺得殘障了！」
這句話深深地震撼了爸爸 Dick！

他決心要把那種感覺盡可能地帶給兒子，預備好參加 1979 年的波士頓馬拉松。

那麼Dick為何不試試自己一個人參加比賽，看看表現如何？「我不會獨個兒參賽。」

Dick說。他參加比賽純粹是為了當他們一起跑步、游泳和踏單車，

看到Rick面上露出甜美笑容時的「奇妙感覺」。

今年，Dick與Rick分別65和43歲，已完成了他們第24次波士頓馬拉松，

在20,000名參賽者中排名第5,083。

他們的最佳時間？是在1992年的兩小時40分——只落後世界紀錄35分鐘；

當然，或許你還未留意到，這紀錄是由一個沒有推著輪椅的人所創的。

兩年前，在一次比賽中，Dick輕微心臟病發。其後醫生發現他的一條大動脈有95%栓塞了。

其中一名醫生對他說︰「若非你一直保持著這樣好的狀態，你大可能15年前已不久於人世。」

現在，儘管Rick有自己的住宅單位（他享有居家照料服務）並在波士頓工作，

而Dick從軍隊退役後已在麻薩諸塞州的荷蘭市居住，但他們總有團聚的方法。

他們經常在全國各地發表演說，而每週末也會參加極耗體力的比賽，當中包括今年的父親節。

當晚，Dick會請父親吃晚飯，但他最想送給父親的禮物，是他永遠買不到的。

Rick打道︰「我最想送給爸爸的，是爸爸坐在椅上，由我推他一次！」
